About the BAS & GST Calculator

The BAS (Business Activity Statement) and GST calculator helps Australian sole traders and small businesses work out the GST component of sales and purchases, calculate net GST payable to the ATO, and prepare figures for BAS lodgement. GST is a 10% goods and services tax applied to most sales made by GST-registered businesses in Australia.

How to Use It

  1. Enter your total GST-inclusive sales (revenue) for the period.
  2. Enter your total GST-inclusive business purchases and expenses.
  3. The calculator separates the GST component from each figure and shows the net GST payable (GST on sales minus GST credits on purchases).
  4. This net GST figure is what you report and pay to the ATO on your BAS.

Who Needs to Lodge a BAS?

You must register for GST โ€” and subsequently lodge a BAS โ€” if your business has a GST turnover (gross income minus GST) of $75,000 or more per year ($150,000 for non-profit organisations). Taxi and rideshare drivers must register regardless of turnover. BAS lodgement frequency is quarterly for most small businesses, though the ATO may require monthly lodgement for businesses with higher turnover or that have had compliance issues. Penalties apply for late lodgement, so marking your BAS due dates in your calendar is essential.

To find the GST component of a GST-inclusive price, divide the total by 11. For example, a $110 invoice includes $10 GST ($110 รท 11 = $10). The pre-GST price is $100. To add GST to a price, multiply by 1.1: $100 ร— 1.1 = $110 including GST.
